This was my very first self portrait that was done in pencil for
my Studio in Art class in 9th grade (1996). We used the "grid method" using reference photos. My teacher
took pictures of each of us. Most people she took a head on portrait shot. I had a head on shot...but while I
was drawing, working on another project, she came up and took a picture of me...and that is the picture I did. I remember
being embarassed when we put up all our self portraits up for critique` one day...and no one could say anyhitng about mine
about how I could improve it. Loking back on it, I'm rather pleased, but my humility hated being the only
one in the class with nothing to improve on with my portrait.
(I don't have the original photo..but I have my photocopy that I made my grid on. When
I can find the photocopy I will scan and post it)

This was my first attempt at a self portrait in color.

Another attempt. I did this portrait because I like the picture
and wanted to paint it.
I have this strange paranoid reservation about self portraits because
I have a fear that enjoying painting my own image makes me vain (pride being the sin I fear most). But...I take the
advice of someone told me recently...I "consider it a form of practice." and "if I were inaccurate on my own face it
would insult no one other than myself!"
